Kelly Accetta Crowe from The British Museum talks about the new Ancient Egypt exhibition at Ferens Art Gallery.
The exhibition will explore the mystery of ancient Egypt, celebrating two of the greatest discoveries of the last 200 years.
“We really wanted to give an idea of what hieroglyphs were really like in ancient Egypt and how people used them. So, there’s a variety of objects that we wanted to include. Things not only for the King of course, which we were expecting, but also the afterlife, books of the dead and ancestor statues that were really beautiful that people would have had in their homes to remember their ancestors”
“It’s really important for us that we are able to share some of these exhibitions with places around the UK that don’t normally get to necessarily London to see the exhibition itself.
“There are three partner museums that are getting this exhibition and it starts here in Hull, which is very exciting, at the Ferens Art Gallery.”
“It’s a fabulous opportunity for everyone in the area. Especially children who are learning about ancient Egypt in their schools to have an experience of the objects themselves.”
“There are of course ancient Egyptian objects in this area, but we really wouldn’t to be able to bring this narrative, which is one that has been so important this past year and in 2022 because it was the bicentennial of the decipherment of hieroglyphs, so we really wanted to give that out to more people than just in London.”
