National curriculum assessment results, released by the Department for Education today (Thursday 31 August), show that Hull is continuing to improve, at the combined measure, in line with improvements nationally.
Early data released shows 61 per cent of the citys pupils reached the expected standard in all three of the core subjects (Reading, Writing and Mathematics), in line with the national average of 61 per cent, compared to 53 per cent (locally and nationally) in 2016 when new assessment and accountability measures were introduced.
Hulls 10 and 11-year-old (Year 6) pupils took tests in Reading, Mathematics and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS) in May 2017.
In addition, across the separate subjects:
70 per cent of pupils reached the expected standard in Reading, the corresponding England average was 71 per cent
75 per cent in Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling, the corresponding England average was 77 per cent
At Mathematics, the citys result of 75 per cent is in line with the England average
76 per cent in Writing (Teacher Assessment) – in line with the England average of 76 per cent.
Councillor Phil Webster, Portfolio Holder for Learning, Skills and Safeguarding Children, said: These encouraging results show that we are continuing to move in the right direction through year-on-year improvement.
We have continued to work closely with primary schools and I hope we can now build on these results and continue to improve the educational attainment across the city.
We want to help our children and young people in the city achieve the best that they can to give them the greatest opportunities.
