Call for Creatives to submit artwork for 2022 Open Exhibition

The Ferens Art Gallery is calling for submissions from professional and amateur artists for the 2022 Open Exhibition.

The Ferens Open offers a platform to both seasoned exhibitors and artists looking to show their work for the very first time.

All UK artists aged 16 or above can enter and are eligible to submit up to three pieces of work for consideration between Tuesday 2 November and Sunday 21 November 2021 using an online application form.

Works will then be selected by a panel of specialist judges from the arts sector in November. This year the selectors will be Sabine Bieli, Visual Artist, Dr Rosy Gray, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, Norfolk and Andy Train, Pride in Hull Co Vice-Chair / Creative Director.

The chosen artworks will be on display from Saturday 19 February until Monday 2 May 2022 at the Ferens Art Gallery. Successful artists will be eligible to win cash prizes sponsored by the Friends of the Ferens, and BSB Architecture.

This year the Gallery has organised free 30 minute workshops for artists to book onto if they are unsure how to submit their work online, photograph their artwork, or even set up an email address. Full details of these can be found here.

Councillor Marjorie Brabazon, chair of Hull Culture and Leisure, said: “The annual Open Exhibition at the Ferens Art Gallery has celebrated the creativity of amateur and professional artists since 1967 and it is important that we offer this regular opportunity to showcase exceptional local and regional talent.

“The diversity of the content and of the artists’ who submit work for the Open is its hallmark and I would urge local artists to get creative and have a go.”

The annual Open Exhibition is a highlight of the Ferens calendar.

Claire Longrigg, exhibitions officer at Ferens Art Gallery, said: “The Open Exhibition draws thousands of visitors each year and is a major highlight of the gallery’s programme. We are looking forward to receiving submissions from not only well-established artists but new and emerging talent, to create an exciting exhibition of diverse work.”

“This year we’re very pleased to be able to bring back our workshops to support artists with photographing or submitting their artwork online. It’s a great opportunity for artists to exhibit their work professionally, sell work, or even win a cash prize.”

It costs £5 to submit each piece of work and the work must have been created within the last 18 months.

All artists will be notified of the selector’s decision by email, and if successful will be asked to deliver the artwork to the gallery from Saturday 15 January – Friday 28 January 2022.
