IETM 2019 in Hull: All you need to know

Movers and shakers from across the cultural globe are heading to Hull this weekend for the annual IETM meeting.

IETM – a worldwide network of more than 500 performing arts groups and artists from more than 50 countries – has chosen the city for its first meeting of all its members in the UK since 2010.

In honour of the event, there’s lots of stuff popping up across the city.

Us Against Whatever, Middle Child

If you haven’t heard of or seen anything by Hull’s award-winning gig theatre company Middle Child, then quite frankly, where have you been?

The gig theatre carousel has been churning out some of the the country’s most inspired, thought-provoking and acclaimed theatre over recent years and their latest offering hits Hull this week.

Us Against Whatever is an electrifying cabaret about the places we keep in out hearts – and it includes karaoke.

Ladylike by Ella Mesma will be shown on 30 March at the Ferens Art Gallery.

In the wake of #MeToo comes this  furious and funny show from Ella Mesma Company. Ladylike is a new piece of dance theatre which takes a fierce, frank and humorous look at the potential and limitations of gender roles in modern day society.

Man on the moon, Keisha Thompson

Keisha Thompson is inviting audiences to join her on an award-winning journey through space and time.

The solo performance includes poetry, looped sounds and storytelling, and explores the impact mental health can have on the family dynamic.

Face In/Let’s Talk About Dis, Candoco Dance Company

You might have seen the renowned company of disabled and non-disabled dancers on BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing.

In this double bill for IETM, the company serve up another of their trademark profound and boundary-pushing performances.

The Money by Kaleider will take place from 28 to 30 March at The Guildhall.

The Money, Kaleider

The Money is a cross between a game and a theatrical performance.

Audiences are offered different levels of participation, with some given the power to decide how to spend a pot of money…but if they can’t decide, it’s a rollover! (with the sum passed on to the next performance).

No kids, Ad Infinitum

Should we have kids, or not? That’s the question asked on this theatrical roller coaster from award-winning Bristol-based company, Ad Infinitum.

George and Nir are a real-life same-sex couple trying to answer to answer the above, and trying to wrestle with a succession of ethical challenges.

Fat Blokes, Scottee and Friends Ltd

This is a dance show like no other, uncovering how we view overweight men. The show is made in collaboration with Lea Anderson and four ‘fat blokes’ who’ve never got on stage before.

Hull theatre company Silent Uproar is bringing its Edinburgh Fringe Festival award-winning show A Super Happy Story to Hull Truck Theatre for IETM.

The cabaret musical about depression is a fast-paced, unrelenting and joyful show which shouts that it’s OK not to be OK.
