Pride in Hull to be celebrated with online exhibition – and you can get involved

Pride in Hull will be celebrated this year through a new online exhibition – and organisers want you to be part of it.

The exhibition will be hosted by Hull Museums, working with both Pride in Hull and Yorkshire MESMAC.

Pride in Our City will feature people’s pictures, stories, videos, and memories of the annual event as well as documenting individuals’ experiences of being part of the LGBT+ community.

Andy Train, co-vice chair of Pride in Hull, said: “This year, more than ever before, it’s vital that we stay connected with each other and are supported. This project is the start of a special relationship that will see more LGBT+ content in our local museums, history and treasure houses.

“For almost twenty years people have flocked to our award-winning annual celebration of LGBT+ life and have lots of happy memories and lovely experiences to share.”

Yorkshire MESMAC, one of the oldest and largest sexual health organisations in the country, is also contributing to the exhibition by supporting the creation and curation of content.

Pride in Our City will be hosted on the revamped Humber Museums Partnership website from Saturday 25 July.

Councillor Marjorie Brabazon, chair of Hull Culture and Leisure, said: “For almost two decades, Pride in Hull has celebrated the LGBT+ community and developed into one of the country’s most prominent Pride events. The annual celebration brings out the best in our city, as well as reminding us of the challenges and injustices we still face.

“Unfortunately this year’s event, for obvious reasons, cannot take place but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate Pride in Hull and the LGBT+ community. This fantastic online exhibition will showcase one of the city’s most successful and much-loved events, as well as highlighting the importance of equality, inclusion and acceptance.”

Craig Moody, community development worker for the LGBT+ Community at Yorkshire MESMAC, said: “We’re super excited to be a part of this project and virtually reaching out to our LGBT+ communities to get them involved too.

“Pride for everyone is different this year but Pride doesn’t stop because there is no physical event. Our Pride inside shines through and we can’t wait to speak to the community about what Pride means to them.”

Hull Museums is inviting anyone with memories or experiences of Pride in Hull to contribute to the upcoming digital exhibition. This can be in in form of pictures, comments, video or audio, sharing what Pride in Hull means to you.

You can get involved via social media by commenting on posts on Hull Museums’ Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, or alternatively by emailing your content directly to Hull Museums at [email protected]
