Shop offering low-cost electrical items for reuse opens in east Hull

A new shop aimed at boosting the reuse of unwanted but good quality domestic appliances has opened today in Marfleet Lane, Hull.

Every year, thousands of working fridges, freezers, washing machines and other large domestic appliances are taken to household waste and recycling centres across Hull and East Riding areas.

Many of these items are suitable for reuse and as a result, Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Dove House Hospice and FCC Environment have teamed up to launch a new reuse project which specifically targets these items before selling them to raise money for Dove House Hospice.

The reuse project encourages residents in the Hull and East Riding area to donate their unwanted large domestic appliances at one of the thirteen Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) located in the area.

The two councils were successful in bidding for funding for the new project from the Distributor Takeback Scheme fund for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment recycling (WEEE).

The scheme has created three new jobs for local residents and it’s predicted it will benefit around 1,750 low income households in the Hull and East Riding areas.

Councillor Anita Harrison, portfolio holder for waste management at Hull City Council, said: “We are calling on residents to support this project and donate their unwanted domestic appliances at our household waste recycling centres.

“We know that plenty of reusable white goods are sometimes brought to the centres and until now these items have not been targeted for reuse.

“We hope that this project will reduce the amount of unnecessary waste, give the residents the chance to pick up quality white goods at a competitive price, increase recycling and have a positive impact on the environment.”

Dove House Hospice will collect these items from the network of household waste recycling centres which are operated by FCC Environment who separate out the re-usable items on site, before a team of experts assess and test the appliances to ensure they meet industry standards before being resold.

They will then be sold for a low-cost price in the new reuse electricals shop located at 254 Marfleet Lane, Hull.  Both Hull and East Riding residents will also benefit from free delivery of the purchased goods.

All proceeds will go towards supporting Dove House Hospice.

The items the reuse shop will sell include fridges, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, tumble dryers, cookers, microwave ovens, and single/double ovens.

The shop is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
