Hull’s Bee Lady, and Pride of Britain winner, given Freedom of the City honour

Hull City Council is to present Hull’s Bee Lady, Jean Bishop, the Freedom of the City honour at its Full Council meeting today.

The Lord Mayor of Kingston Upon Hull, Councillor John Hewitt, will present Jean with the Honorary Freemen scroll at the Full Council meeting.

The title is the highest honour that a Council can bestow and Civic Committee deemed Jean worthy of the honour for rendered eminent services to the City.

Jean, who is 95 years of age, has selflessly devoted her time to raising money for Age UK, and has become well known in the city as the Bee Lady. She has raised more than £119,000 and in 2013 her hard work was rewarded with a Pride of Britain Award for Fundraiser of the Year.

Jean was most recently one of the guests invited to attend a Royal lunch to welcome The Queen to Hull, during its City of Culture year.

Leader of Hull City Council, Councillor Stephen Brady said:

“Jean is a true inspiration and has worked tirelessly for more than 25 years to raise money for Age UK. She has become a local hero and I’m delighted she has again been recognised for all of her hard work by receiving this honour.”
