Children do not come with instructions or a handbook! ‘Understanding Your Child’ is a new set of free online guides with useful hints, tips and support from pregnancy through to the age of 18!
Hull is the first city in the region to adopt the well-established ‘Solihull Approach’.
Hull parents-to-be, parents, grandparents and carers in Hull can access these free online guides for the first time from Thursday 25 October. The guides support parents in building positive and responsive relationships with their children by increasing emotional health and well-being.
Hull City Council is delighted to announce they are launching three free online guides for all parents to be, parents,
grandparents and carers and as part of the wave two national roll-out. The guides are part of the acclaimed and award-winning ‘Solihull Approach’ programme, established 20 years ago, which supports parents and carers to build positive and responsive relationships with their children. These evidence based accredited online guides from pre-birth to adolescence have been developed with practitioners and parents and tested in the field with an ongoing research programme.
These guides are for everyone who wants to be the best mum, dad, grandparent or carer they can be. Together we are aiming to change the culture around parents’ self-development and improve children’s well-being at the same time. A smoother home life is good for concentration, learning and performance at School. This is a great investment for children and families and a fantastic opportunity which will mean every single Hull resident can access the guides completely free of charge!
The three online guides include:
• Understanding your pregnancy, labour, birth and your baby
• Understanding your baby
• Understanding your child – aged 6 months to 18 years-old
Councillor Peter Clark, Portfolio Holder for Learning, Skills and Safeguarding Children, said: “Hull City Council recognises the important role parents and carers have in securing positive outcomes for children and young people across the city, and that is why we are adopting this approach. This well-established model supports parents and carers to build their resilience, knowledge and confidence so they are equipped with skills that will help them to be the very best parent. There are so many benefits associated to completing the online guides, from increased confidence and understanding of child development to better behaved children.”
This approach has also been embedded throughout the council’s children and family service with full training provided to practitioners in the use of the approach.
The FREE online guides are available to all Hull parents to be, parents, grandparents and carers and are easily accessible at home via a mobile phone, tablet device or laptop or in any adult education centre, library or children’s centre across the city.
Each module only takes 15-20 minutes to complete and they can all be completed flexibly at an individual’s own pace. There is indefinite access – once the access code has been used access does not expire. The account will resume where the parents to be, parents, grandparents and carers left off.
