Warnings issued for overrun roadworks in Hull

Since April 2020 Hull City Council has issued 12 warning notices for overrun roadworks.

Since the authority introduced a robust permit scheme, utility companies and council schemes are required to submit plans for works which affect traffic flows up to 12 weeks in advance.

At present, utility companies approach Hull City Council for permits in order to carry out planned essential repairs, however in the likelihood of an emergency, road work permits are often issued within hours so that an essential repair can be undertaken.

If works are not completed within their designated timeframe, utility companies including water, gas and electric will face warnings and a potential fine.

The same notices can also be applied to works which the council has commissioned.

Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for economic investment, regeneration and planning, said: “The council has been actively considering this action for a number of months now.

“We understand that these works are essential, as they are maintaining crucial electricity, gas and water supplies to many residents and businesses across the city.

“However we also understand the frustration that these works can cause, and we ask motorists to bear with us.

“Our long-term vision is to make Hull a cycling friendly city, and if just five per cent of motorists chose a more sustainable form of transport then we would see a significant reduction in congestion levels. But in order for this to work, our roads must be able to be used and planned works must take place within their designated timeframe so people have confidence in using them.”

Many of the utility works are now taking place as there is a backlog to address following the Covid-19 pandemic. Now lockdown has eased, works will be taking place over the summer period when traffic is usually lighter on the roads.
