How to help someone who’s homeless this Christmas

For most people, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. But for some, it’s the hardest.

As Christmas approaches, some people find themselves homeless and sleeping on the street.

To try and support some of the most vulnerable people in our society, Hull City Council is reminding the public on what action they can take to help.

Councillor John Black, Hull City Council’s portfolio holder for housing, said: “Often when we see people sleeping rough, we want to help but are not sure how to. Fortunately in Hull we have a number of options available. Whenever you see someone, or know someone who is sleeping rough, you can contact the Emmaus Hull and East Riding Outreach Team. The team operate 365 days a year, and will continue to provide support over the festive period.

“Often people feel like the best they can do is to offer food or a hot drink, but by contacting Emmaus you can make sure that they get the support and advice they need to find accommodation as well.

“If you’re struggling or know someone who is, please reach out, someone is always willing to help.”

The Emmaus team go out seven days a week to find rough sleepers and try to get them the accommodation and support they need, there is also a multi-disciplinary hub for those who are homeless and need help to address their substance misuse, mental health or physical health issues, hundreds of hostel beds and access to a range of other accommodation and support including private rented properties, shared accommodation, and the council’s own housing service.
