5 Christmas pantos to see in Hull this weekend

Panto is back in Hull … oh, yes it is! Well, that’s enough of that.

It’s time to dust off the dames because this year’s musical, farcical offerings include the family classic Aladdin, a retelling of Peter Pan set in post-war Hull and a rock and roll take on the Little Mermaid.

Here are 5 Christmas pantos in and around Hull this weekend.

1. Aladdin
Hull New Theatre
Until Sunday 29 December
From £16.50

Starring Blue’s Simon Webbe and Benidorm’s Jake Canuso among a plethora of faces from TV and film, this festive family treat is packed with all the traditional pantomime ingredients, including a lamp-load of comedy, special effects, song, dance and plenty of boos and hisses.

Aladdin, his brother Wishee Washee and his mother Widow Twankey are joined by flying carpets, a wish-granting genie, an evil sorcerer and plenty of festive magic. The last post day for tickets is Friday 20 December. Buy tickets here.

2. Peter Pan
Hull Truck Theatre
Until Saturday 4 January
From £18.50

Join Wendy and Peter Pan for a magical family adventure in Neverland. One night, bedtime stories come alive for the Darling children when Pan and fairy Tinker Bell guide them through the stars to a land of Lost Boys, pirates and mermaids. Time stands still as their action-packed adventure unfolds.

Can they save Tiger Lily from the pirates? Will the fearsome Captain Hook finally have his revenge on Pan, or will the ticking crocodile catch him first? Buy tickets here.

3. The Little Mermaid
Middle Child Theatre, Jubilee Central Hull
Until Sunday 29 December
£16 adults, £10 children

Hull’s rock and roll panto is back – and this year it’s extra fishy. Join hero Ariel on a riotous adventure to the surface of the Humber as she swashbuckles her way to saving the seafaring (Steve) Prince. Will Hull’s favourite panto dame, Pattie Breadcake, be crowned Queen of the Humber? Or will the evil witch, Ursula, seize the throne?

The 6pm performance on Saturday 28 December is Polish-described, with an additional Polish-speaking performer narrating the action throughout the show. Buy tickets here.

4. Sleeping Beauty
The Village Hull
Monday December 23
£15 adults, £15 children

This classic festive pantomime features a sleepy princess, handsome prince and terrifying wicked witch. You’ll even get a hotdog on arrival. Buy tickets here.

5. Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood
The Civic Hall, Cottingham
Sunday 22 December

Jonathan Parker of BBC Radio Humberside’s Westenders is bringing his latest One Off Productions show to Cottingham’s Civic Hall this Christmas. This magical family adventure is based on elements of these two traditional tales.
