The Maritime Museum goes to the Movies

For one week only, the beautiful and historic Court Room at the Hull Maritime Museum will be transformed into a movie theatre screening a series of films relating to the sea and seafaring as part of the national Museums at Night.

This is a chance to see some much loved classics, family favourites and fascinating documentaries on the big screen in a magnificent museum setting. Screenings start on Saturday 21 October and run until Friday 27 October.

Starting with a family matinee weekend with Finding Nemo at 1-3pm and The Little Mermaid, which is sold out, there will also be weekday evenings from 7pm running for a maximum of two hours and will feature screenings of:

Leviathan on Monday 23 October, 7pm – this documentary is rated 12A by the BBFC
This avant-garde documentary film allows viewers to experience the wild and dangerous world of a fishing trawler operating off the coast of America. It is far from a traditional documentary with practically no dialogue. Instead, this film from 2012 seeks to document fish, birds, nets, man, the sea etc with the same curiosity and the same intensity, everything being of the same importance. Local History – Hull on Tuesday 24 October, 7pm-8.30pm
Join us for an evening looking back at Hull’s recent maritime and social history with a screening of two short documentary films from the British Film Institute (Hull Docks) and the Yorkshire Film Archive (To Hull & Back). Free, ticketed event, advanced booking is essential.

March of the Penguins on Wednesday 25 October, 7-9pm
A screening of the acclaimed, Oscar-winning documentary which looks at the incredible struggle emperor penguins must make in order to survive the harsh environment of Antarctica. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this beautifully crafted film follows the annual journey that penguins and their mates endure to bring a new born penguin into the world. Tickets cost £2 for adults, and £1under 16s, advanced booking is essential.

In the Heart of the Sea on Thursday 26 October, 7-9pm – this film is rated 12A by the BBFC
This 2015 adventure-drama tells the story of the sinking of the American whaling ship Essex in 1820, an event that inspired the novel Moby-Dick. An international co-production between the United States and Spain, it was directed and produced by Ron Howard and stars Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, Ben Whishaw and Brendan Gleeson. Tickets cost £2 for adults, and £1under 16s, advanced booking is essential.

Jaws on Friday 27 October, 7-9pm – this film is rated 12A by the BBFC
Steven Spielberg’s classic telling of Peter Benchley’s acclaimed novel of the same name. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…

This offers people who might not necessarily normally visit museums the opportunity to come along and discover this cultural gem right on their doorstep!”
