Hull City Council’s financial position has improved according to latest report

Robust financial management has meant that Hull City Council’s financial position has improved for the current year.

The Council’s Cabinet is set to review the latest financial position at its meeting on Monday 28 June.

The 2020/21 Provisional Financial Outturn report outlines that despite budget pressures in Adults and Children’s Services, the position has been counter balanced by the financial performance in other services.  It also highlights that the Covid emergency has had a huge impact on council services and finances, but this has been offset by recently announced Government funding, which the council has lobbied to receive.

Portfolio Holder for finance, Councillor Phil Webster said: “The pandemic has, and continues to dominate the council’s work and resources. We have pushed Government for essential levels of funding so that we can support our residents and the city.

“We have been able to support local businesses, as well as arts and cultural organisations at a time where support to keep operating was absolutely necessary.

“Our income streams have been reduced over the last 16 months and this remains a significant challenge for us going forward. We will continue to scrutinise council spend in order to ensure we are protecting the most required services for our residents.”
