Living With Water badge launched for Guides, Brownies and Scouts

The Living With Water partnership has launched a new badge for Guides, Brownies and Scouts as part of its work to increase flood awareness and resilience in Hull and the East Riding.

Hull remains the second-biggest flood risk in the UK outside of London, and the new badge will encourage the next generation to “be prepared”.

Yorkshire Water’s education team has designed the activities, and children can earn the badge by completing fun challenges to explore the world of water, climate change and preparing for a flood event.

Eve Pierrepont, Portfolio Manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “A huge part of our work as Living With Water is to engage with children to inform them of the dangers of flooding and how to plan and prepare for any potential flood events in Hull and East Riding.

“Young people are naturally very interested in climate change and the environment, and we hope by creating this badge we will be able to educate the children on this issue that impacts their local area.”

The Living With Water Badge

Living With Water is a partnership between Yorkshire Water, Environment Agency, Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the University of Hull that aims to help build understanding across Hull and the East Riding about the threats and opportunities water brings to our region.

Yorkshire Water’s education team also offer sessions at the Living with Water Community Hub at Wilberforce College. The hub is a one-of-a-kind facility providing an inspiring and interactive space for schools, students and the wider community to learn all about water and climate resilience.

A wet lab provides a hands-on space designed to educate people on water cycles and flood risk in the area. Within the lab, there is a 3D model to showcase sustainable drainage solutions (SuDS) and how they work, as well as an interactive LED wall screen to be used as a teaching tool on the topic of flooding.
