Get creative in 2020 with Makerspace at Hull Central Library

Plenty of people will have already made – and broken – new year’s resolutions.

January might be a great time to decide to learn how to play an instrument, be more active or cut something toxic out of your diet.

But it’s also a good time to commit to being more creative – and Hull has a place that is a hotbed for creativity.

Makerspace in Hull Central Library is kitted out with an array of resources, tools and machines to allow the mind to run wild.

There are 3D printers, laser cutting, a CNC machine and various tools for jewellery-making, woodwork and other arts and crafts.

To help get those creative juices flowing, Makerspace is running a number of workshops over the next few weeks:

What is 3D printing?
Saturday 18 January 10.30am-12.30pm

Suitable for complete beginners, this workshop will give you the tools and knowledge to start your own adventure in 3D printing.

How do you … Arduino
Saturday 25 January 10am-1pm

Arduinos are small, cheap, easy to program micro-controllers that allow you to start exploring the creative uses of electronics and hardware with no prior knowledge. In this workshop you will be guided step-by-step through the process of getting started with the Arduino platform, going from simply turning an LED on and off and progressing through to using sensors, making sound and controlling motors. Get started with Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator is the industry standard software for vector graphics. This two-hour workshop is suitable for beginners of Adobe Illustrator who want to learn the basic fundamentals of the software and gain the skills needed to create vector illustrations. Book tickets here.

In this two-hour workshop you’ll learn the basics of coding with Python, a modern, easy to understand programming language that can do almost anything. From building websites to machine learning, Python is used in a huge variety of applications and is the fastest growing language in the world, used by YouTube, Netflix, and Google. Family Maker Day
Tuesday 18 February 10am-3pm

A chance for all budding maker families out there to learn together and engage is some fun hands-on activities in a relaxed and friendly environment. Children must be aged over eight and accompanied by an adult. Maximum two adults per child. Book tickets here.

Wednesday 19 February, 5.30pm-7.30pm

This short workshop and talk is aimed at complete beginners, giving you the skills needed to start your own journey in laser cutting and engraving using our in-house equipment. Book tickets here.
