Splash boat renovation begins as contractor appointed to restore historic ride

A contractor has been appointed to carry out the renovation of Hull’s East Park splash boat.

John H Rundle Limited will carry out the design and restoration of the historic water chute before it reopens to visitors in spring 2020.

The listed Wicksteed splash boat has been providing thrills to visitors since 1929 and is just one of three left in the country.

Councillor Dave Craker, portfolio holder for culture, leisure and tourism, said: “The splash boat is a star attraction in East Park and has been delighting visitors for generations, so it is vital that we maintain and invest in it.

“We have reached a significant milestone by appointing a specialist contractor and I look forward to reopening the ride once the repairs have been completed.

“Hull has some fantastic parks and open spaces which should be enjoyed by residents and visitors for years to come.”

Rundles is a family-run business that specialises in amusement ride repairs, relocation and inspections.

The company was awarded the £118,650 contract following a competitive tender process. They were deemed to be offering the best in quality and price based on a 70/30 criteria.

Work to repair the splash boat will begin next week.

The Playing Out Project sees skipping ropes and chalks provided for residents.
The city centre will be taken over for the annual Pride in Hull event this weekend.
