Marianne Lewsley-Stier, Curator, Humber Street Gallery, says, “It’s an honour to partner up with New Contemporaries and Ferens Art Gallery on this fantastic exhibition and programme. Bloomberg New Contemporaries is all about supporting emerging artists and their practice, and that is a sentiment we strongly believe in too. We were originally supposed to host New Contemporaries in 2020, so we’re incredibly excited to finally bring it to Hull!”

Councillor Alison Collinson, Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure Ltd, says: “I’m delighted that the Ferens, alongside Humber Street Gallery, is going to be part of showcasing the work of these talented new artists. I encourage our local residents to take advantage of this exhibition while it’s here and enjoy the rich collection of inspiring works on offer.”

Drawing on personal and universal narratives, this year’s exhibition demonstrates a rich diversity of voices and approaches to making. The 48 selected artists include final year students and recent graduates from UK arts institutions, as well as practitioners on alternative peer-to-peer learning programmes.

As well as taking part in the annual touring exhibition, the artists will benefit from inclusion in the New Contemporaries online platform and gain access to a range of mentoring, talks, discussion groups and workshops through New Contemporaries bespoke Bridget Riley Artist Development Programme.

Kirsty Ogg, Director, New Contemporaries, says, “We’re delighted to bring New Contemporaries to Hull to engage audiences in this vibrant arts ecology. The last two years have brought some profound challenges to the arts, especially for emerging and early career artists in terms of the support and opportunities that they have been able to access.

“It has also pushed social justice issues to the fore with dynamic debates and actions taking place. This year’s exhibition presents many artists using art to confront issues of equality – social, race, gender, sexuality, as well as works which revisit history and memory to reimagine the present and future. The result is a survey of art of our time.

“New Contemporaries is committed to continuing to find new ways to support the community we serve to ensure that they continue to have a platform for their voices to be heard.”

Alongside this exhibition, both venues will be hosting supporting events as part of a public programme. A variety of participating artists will take part in an Online Artist Talk on 28 September from 6pm to 7:30pm, hosted digitally via Zoom, as well as an in-person Artist Talk at Humber Street Gallery on 10 November, part of their Thursday Lates series of events. On the last Sunday of every month of the exhibition being open, visitors can join a free hourly tour of the works across both buildings, run by HEY! Volunteers. These start at both galleries on the hour from 1pm, with the last tour starting at 3pm. Visitors can turn up to either site to begin their guided tour.

There’ll be an opportunity to meet some of the artists at the official Exhibition Launch Party at Humber Street Gallery from 6pm to 9pm on 22 September, a celebration of the works and artists selected. Humber Street Gallery will also offer thirty-minute Lunchtime Curator Tours of the works in Space 1 and 2 of their building, every Thursday at 12pm throughout the duration of the exhibition. During October half-term on 26 October, the venue will offer a special Kids Curator Talk, aiming to explore the art on display with families and young people of the city, aged between 11 and 16 (KS3/4).

Tickets for all events that require booking can be found on the galleries’ websites and on Eventbrite:
