Coronavirus case confirmed in Hull

A case of Coronavirus in Hull has been confirmed by Public Health England (PHE).

Hull City Council has released written and video statements from Julia Weldon, Director of Public Health, on what is being done and what residents can do to protect themselves and others.

Julia said: “We send our best wishes to the patient as they continue their recovery. We have robust infection control arrangements in place and strong partnership arrangements across the health and care system. We will continue to work closely with Public Health England (PHE), the NHS and all our health and care partners to prevent further spread of the virus.

“Any risk to people in Hull and the wider Humber region remains low and there is no reason for anyone not to go about their normal business. PHE is directly contacting anyone who has been a close contact of the case.

“In the meantime, it is important to follow good hygiene practices. If you show symptoms, call NHS 111 rather than contacting or visiting your GP, or attending hospital. For the latest advice, visit gov.uk/coronavirus.

“In partnership with PHE, we will continue to share timely and relevant information. Please refer only to official sources for updates.”

Dr Simon Padfield, consultant in communicable disease control for Public Health England Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “Public Health England is contacting people who had close contact with a case of COVID-19 confirmed in the Humber area. The case is a resident of Hull who became infected while in Italy.

“Close contacts will be given health advice about symptoms and emergency contact details to use if they become unwell in the 14 days after contact with the confirmed cases. This tried and tested method will ensure we are able to minimise any risk to them and the wider public.”

As of Tuesday 3 March, a total of 13,911 people have been tested in the UK, of which 13,860 were confirmed negative. 51 were confirmed as positive. Find the latest national information and advice here.
