People in Hull are being urged to dispose of cigarette butts responsibly after more than 60 people were fined for littering in the city in the past year.
More than 50 Hull residents were handed heavy fines after not disposing of used cigarettes correctly.
And seven visitors, from as far away as Peterborough, were also fined for littering.
Cigarette butts cause considerable harm to the environmental. It is estimated each butt takes 12 years to decompose, with each one containing 2,500 chemical compounds that can pollute 500 litres of water.
And the filters in cigarettes are one of the major components of single-use plastic waste, breaking into progressively smaller pieces and release toxins into the environment that can be harmful to wildlife.
Councillor Anita Harrison, portfolio holder for Streetscene for Hull City Council, said: “Littering of any kind, including throwing cigarette butts onto the floor, is selfish, anti-social and disrespectful to people who throw their litter away in the proper manner. It is also very damaging to the environment.
“While the majority of Hull’s residents and visitors do their best to keep the city tidy, more than 70 per cent of streets are affected by smoking litter, particularly at busy spots like high streets or transport hubs.
“We want our city to look its best for everyone, which is why we should all do our bit to keep it clean. People who do not dispose of their litter will be fined in an effort to deter people from littering in the future.
“People who are fined are advised to pay the initial cost, otherwise the case will be taken to court and could result in much higher costs as a result of the additional prosecution action.”
The offenders, below, were fined £400 after they failed to pay an initial fine of £100, resulting in a larger penalty and court costs, under section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
